1200 miles, yes 1200 miles 82 750F SS- NO IDLE

tommyman
after a lot of cleaning- removed from my best friend's basement (has 1985 plates on it!) I have successfully started it ONLY IF I RAPIDLY TWIST THE THROTTLE on full choke.  Snap throttle close and it dies.  NO IDLE.  As my 91 BMW k100RS 16V has injection, and the other Honda I had was a XR75 that I raced in Middle School  LOL    AM I assuming correctly that twisting the throttle is priming the carb and I am not getting fuel to the jets?

Remedy?  HELP?

Thanks in advance,

Tom

This seems like a reoccurring theme. Rebuild the carbs.

was/is this correct re: primaries?  I have rebuilt a few carbs in my life- Rochesters, Mikuni, etc.  Pretty simple- hope is to get it running enough to get her home 12 miles and rebuild there.  My 2 cars dont have hitches.

the carb has 3 jets under the float bowl both the high speed and the low speed can be seen and removed + cleaned. There is a third jet under a rubber cap that cant be removed. Also on the front of the bowl plate toward the cylinders there is a mixture screw that has to do with idle. When you remove those count the turns to closed before you remove them so you can put them back in the same spot.

It seems you have converted your bike into a jet plane.
Good job man.

Now THAT would be fun huh?  1200 MPH on a bike-   Last Indian be damned.  SUcks the wind from your lungs so fast that they turn inside out- whoa.  Now if I can just get her to 12MPH i'd be THRILLED>  Things seem to be improving- this weekend I put carb cleaner additive in the tank and the bike seems to respond with a more vigorous start.  Still no idle.  I am now assuming needle on floats are stuck closed, therefore the advice of removing the bowls and cleaning them is probable.

any TRICKS to removing air box?? Seems shoe-horned in there....labor saving tips are appreciated

dont take the airbox out. the plastic part of the rear fender snaps away from the frame by the air box. loosten and shove the battery cage under the seat frame and then push it and the plastic rear fender against the rear tire toward the back of the bike. Then after the carb boot clamps and the mounting bolt for the air box are loose you can pull the airbox back enough to get the carbs out.

let your fiancee do the lovin' as its her bike
How did it go? out is the easy way. Wait until you try to get them back in. I suggest that you learn some Japanese swear words. The bike seems to understand these better.

OK, Carbs out- easy as pie.  Remove float bowls, all carbs getting gas, and blow thru gas line comes out all 4 float valves.  GOOD>  Put carbs back on temporarily, and fire up bike- better, sounds like I have idle for 3 whole seconds then die.  I see the carb piston valves hopping up and down like rabbits, but I dont see gas vaporizing (venturi) in the throats....  I suspect needle valves- so next step is to back those out and clean out passage.  EVEYTHING is CLEAN and coming apart very easy, but I suspect a bit of guk is all it takes to clog a jet.  WHen I twist the throttle, I am evidfently 'priming' the carb with the valve adjacent to the #3carb and that is what she's running on.  SHes not sucking gas up from the bowls into the carb body as I can see.

SHOULD THE TANK BE FULL?  I have 1/2 tank now- does gravity help or is the carb piston literally 'sucking' fuel into the bowls/venturi for combustion?  that little cast aluminum valve at end of fuel line above fuel lines appears to be a one-way valve- if I puff air through it, it comes out through all 4 float valves with a short burst then pinches shut (I assume working correctly).  I am NOT putting compressed air through it, just mouth pressure at fuel line...

HEEE HEEE   CLean jets and I rode around the block last night at 10:00 - too quiet to scare the neighbors!  The sweet smell of success, and my hands stink like gas....guess what works?  Tom's of Maine toothpaste- mint oil kills the gas smell, rub it into your hands well- turns the aromatic oils to a non aromatic, like lemon juice on your hands after you clean a fish.  COOL.

Now for a new air filter and a fresh fluid change, Good to go.
