1977 CB750F Side Covers won't fit

welard
Hi everyone

New to the site because I have just bought a 1977 CB750 F.

She runs great now and I am really enjoying it.

It didn't have a left side cover panel when I bought it so I ordered an aftermarket one from ebay which was described for an F and it was the matching one to the right side which I already had.

It arrived today and I was looking forward to fitting it but the locator posts are in the wrong place. It looks like its the correct one but the locator posts are no where near where the the frame tabs are located.

I've posted a couple of photos.......I've doubled checked and these are the only ones I can see anywhere for my bike.

Could someone....for some crazy reason, have rewelded the frame tabs at some point.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Pete

Will it fit the right side??? Just asking it looks like you may have just got the right cover. Your tabs look right to me.
Simple if some one else can, why can't I

Hi Shultz

Nope, definitely the left...first thing I did was check the right side.

I know, right!?!  The tabs on all the ones I can see on the internet are the same as the cover I bought. But have a look at the distance between the 2 top tabs on the cover and see the distance between the lcator tabs on the frame....much longer.

And the bottom post is on the opposite side of where the frame tab is......

I'd like to get the correct cover, if one exists, but its an easy fix to drill a small hole and zip-ties to hold it in place.

Or, someone could tell me that I hav a super rare variation, with a bunch of concept mods that were put on a handful of bikes world wide......hey was that a unicorn flying by...!?!

Cheers for the question though....I have been known to make simpler - yet costly - mistakes

The tallest end of the side cover faces forward. If that cover doesn't fit the other side (right hand-throttle side)of your bike I don't know why it doesn't fit, but I do know why that cover doesn't fit the left side( clutch lever side)...it's the wrong side.

I don't want you to feel like we're picking on you. But I'm with Shultz. That's not a left side cover. Sorry bud.

Hi shinyribs - respect....I've read many of your posts and you have provided me with lots of solutions - you have a wealth of knowledge....thank you.

Could you please have a close look at my original photo, you will see that the cover I am holding up is inside-out and you will have to mentally flip it in your mind to see that it is in fact the left hand side cover. I photographed it this way to highlight were the mounting posts are in relation to the mounting frame tabs.

Just in case though I have taken another photo of the cover facing the correct way and again from the inside-out so you can see where the tabs do not line up.

Happy to stand corrected, but I think I've got the correct side sorted.

What would really help is if you could remove your cover and take a photo of it inside-out and include where the tabs are on the frame.

Cheers

And just in case there's any confusion at all about this being a left side cover...here it is against the right hand cover....on the right and the left one....errrr....on the left

Thanks again shinyribs

I just worked it out....even though my bike was built in 3/1977 it is regarded as a 1976 F as opposed to a 1977 F......I know, right!?!

The 1975 and 1976 F models have the frame tabs in a slightly different location to the 1977 and 1978.

So here's to $40 in shipping for the incorrect cover. Just gone back and ordered the 76 model which I can see have a slightly different tab configurantion.

At least this post may help someone else...

Cheers and thanks again.

It does look like a nice side cover, so you should be able to resale it, and recoup most of your money back.

Yeh, the reflection from the camera flash has created an optical illusion, making it look convex instead of concave.

Instead of ordering the correct one, I've gone ahead and made a tiny hole in the mounting post and secured it with a couple of black zip ties until I can justify spending more on the correct one. I now have to carry an end cutter and spare zip ties if I ever need to access behind, but hey.....this is Classic motorcycling.

Im getting closer to makung a decision to customise it, so I think you guys will unfortunately be fielding more of my dumb questions.

What I am about to do is swap out the seat andcrear fender for a K7 seat, grab rail and chrome fender. What do you guys think about doing sometging like that...from both a mechanical and an aesthetic point of view??

Cheers

F models are not as common as the K's. I'd leave the stock tail on that IMO. I love the way the F models look, kinda wish I hadn't chopped mine up.

I agree with Shiny. Does not make much sense butchering a perfectly good F trying to turn it into a K. I just had to part out an old F model that someone tried to do just that to. None of the brackets line up, and requires a lot of fabrication to mount the parts. If you like the K models better, just sell the F, and buy a K.
