1977 Honda CB750K flasher relay

I've got a weird problem with my CB flasher:

- The indicators didn't work with the relay the bike came with when I bought it. The indicators just light up dimly, but no flashing. The lights on the instrument panel lit up likewise pretty dimly.

- If I bypass the relay with a piece of wire, the indicators and the lights on the instrument panel light up ok. Of course no flashing.

- I bought a new relay and everything worked brilliantly for a minute or two. Then it went back to the first symptom; dimly lit lights and indicators with no flashing.

Did I just blow up the new relay, or what's going on? And how do I prevent it from happening again.

TIA,
