I have done nothing special to my carbs. I have run with and without a air filter and straight piped it for a bit. A simple tweak of the idle mix is all I needed to do. Otherwise shimming the needle a little helped mid a bit.
I know people who have also dropped in a K&N, with head porting, and an 836 kit and the only thing sometimes needed was upping the mains as you would do with the old ones.
The fuel screw is much more adjustable than the older air screw is, then you get to add the accel pump and you have a much more adjustable carb for low speed adjustments. When I frequented the other sohc site, I talked to a number of others about this and while most people liked the older carbs, once people actually see how flexible the 77/78 carbs are, they never went back.
Ultimately there are only 3 differences between the carbs. The fuel screw, accel pump, and press in jet. I do not count the shimmed needles as washer solve that easy.
The press in is a bit of a pain but if ultimately is of little issue. The carb CAN be tapped to allow screw in jets. An old sohc member named Buffo, did it. There goes that restraint. It is acknowledged that the accel pump is nice to have and the fuel screw allows more adjustment.
I think what throws people is the touchyness of any sort of crud, but you know, the CV carbs are just as touchy.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!
