1977 cb750 regulator/rectifier

abomb1982
the problem: Right now at an idle my bike charges at 12v, at 2500rpm it like 14v and at 4000rpm 15v.

The question: If i upgrade to the newer combo reg/rec will I get a more consistent charge? Something like 14v all the time?

Thanks

The regulator is what controls the charge, so if the new one is set correctly, yes, it should charge at 13-14 volts.

Right I get that but because my bike is charging I really want to know what are the advantages if any to updating?

IMO, there's not any advantage. Your bike was built with "mechanical" charging components that are bulky in comparison, but darn near bullet proof. The solid state stuff is small and reliable, but not like the old stuff. 40 year old mechanical voltage regulators that are still healthy is not uncommon. 40 years on anything solid state is remarkable.

Let's see, advantages? None really. Well maybe if you were building a custom bike, and wanted to clean up the electrics. And since the alternator supplies the electricity,  and can only supply so much at low RPMs until the regulator starts to regulate it, I doubt your charging will be any more consistent.
