1977 wont charge the battry

duluth dog
my bike was working fine all last summer, other than running very lean, but i got the carbs all where they should be. and low and behold when i take it out of storage this spring the battery wont charge.  the battery i had last year was old and dying so i got a new one this year, but im still having the same problem.  i can run the bike of a while after letting the battery sit on a tender overnight but after some time the bike will loose power.  i stated taking a look and found a thicker red wire going to a fitting and then the rectifier that was fried apart.  anyone have an idea what the thick red wire does or where it goes to?  also could this be the reason why it wasn't charging?

oil stained brain
peace and grease
it doesn't leak oil, it sweats horsepower

Duluth dog, I do think that is your problem. I am by no means an expert and still learning these bikes, but that would probably create a problem, not getting the charge back correctly to your battery. That does need to be connected or you are not going to get a charge to your battery.
