1978 cb750 oil pump

hondaengineer
Can anyone tell me how much side play there should be in the gear and shaft on the oil pump? I put oil in the intake side of the pump and it sucks it in and pushes it out fine, but I have no oil pressure. The only thing I can see is that appears to have quite a bit of side play in the gear on the pump and I am wondering if the gear could slide off the pump drive gear.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

How do you know you have no pressure? Is the oil light on or do you have a gauge and it worked before but doesn't now?

I don't know what the clearances should be for spec, not of the top o' me head anyways but you can always download the manual here and find out.

Someone brought me this bike in pieces.  I assembled it and it ran briefly, but then I could not get it to run.  I checked the compression and found it low on all cylinders. I tore the motor down and found that the cylinder walls were scored. I replaced the cylinders and installed new pistons and rings. I removed the plug on the oil galley where the oil travels after the filter and kicked the bike over numerous times with the ignition off it is dry. The oil lines are clear, as are the ports where the lines connect to the crankcase. The tank is clean. I removed the oil filter and I am going to put some oil in the oil tank and will kick it over again to see if I am getting oil to the filter.

I do have a manual and they talk about the lobe clearances, but I did not see anything on side play of the pump gear. I am wondering if the pump gear has enough side play to shift ar enough so that it is no longer driven by the drive gear in the transmission.

Thanks for the help.
