1979 CB750 Running a little rich.

Patrick Guild
I am the new owner of a 1979 CB750. I bought it with an aftermarket 4-into-1 exhaust off of a guy who had the machine only about a month. He said he didn't know if the carbs had been done. It will backfire faintly coming off the line, and just feels bogged down. Could this be a sign that carbs have not been done? Thanks.

Does the bike have the stock air box/filter or a pod set up?

Since the PO does not know about the carbs,It would be a good idea to rebuild them and check what jets are in.I would also check what tuning(jets) is needed for an exhaust system change.

You should also check the valve clearances and compression.

You might be able to get it to run alright by just adjusting the air/fuel mix screws a bit, but I'd advise a full carb clean.

Search DOHC carb cleaning procedure on this forum.  There is a good thread with good resources on it.
