1979 CB750L Top End Reassembly - Valve Guide O-Rings

VERN
This post was updated on .
Working on finally putting the top end back together on my 1979 CB750L after about a year hiatus and have run into a snag.  The gasket kit that I purchased came with 16 green o-rings. As far as I can tell, the shop manual does not mention the installation of these o-rings at any point but there are 16 of them and 16 valves so I assume they should be installed during this process.  The gasket kit is correct for my motorcycle. I found an online parts store that has them listed and indicates they are 10x1.6mm valve guide o-rings. Any advice as to where they are installed would be much appreciated.  It has just been a while since the disassembly and I cannot for the life of me remember where I removed 16 o-rings and since the don't show up in the assembly instructions I'm stumped. Below is the link to the online store that has them listed.

Unless you removed the valve springs from the valves, you would not be able to replace them. However it should have real valve guide seals instead of O-rings, but that is what you get in a cheap gasket set.

Sorry, I should have been more specific in my description.  The valves have been removed to replace the valve guide seals and inspect the seats. The gasket kit is Athena brand purchased from vintagecb750.com and comes with the correct valve guide seals but came with these o-rings as well. I have noticed that the photographs on the website show these o-rings in the package but they are not listed in the description of parts that come with the set.

I have no idea of where 16 10mm O-rings would be used on that engine other then a cheap replacement for the valve guide seals. It was common for O-rings to be used in place of valve guide seals back in the 80s on car engines, and the fact that they are green leads me to think that is what they were meant for. Or maybe the AC system, as green O-rings are used on AC systems. Guess you could put them in your O-ring box for later use on something.

Re: 1979 CB750L Top End Reassembly - Valve Guide O-Rings

Well, going to proceed without them and hope all goes well. When I disassembled the top end I do seem to remember there being o-rings in lieu of the valve guide seals, but again that was a busy year ago.  There was also an extra small washer installed with one of the valve assemblies and some of the valve seat washers were installed in the incorrect location. When I bought the motorcycle the seller stated the top-end has been rebuilt....by who knows who.

One last question. Then I'm gonna start the reassembly. The factory service manual does not mention using gasket sealer when installing the base or head gaskets. I'm assuming these are installed "dry"?  I have the barrels off as well to inspect piston rings, pistons, etc.

Yes, those are installed dry, just like every other gasket on that engine.

That's what I thought, as it is how the manual describes, but wanted to make sure. Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.
