1979 carbs question

alehman
Hey all,

for those of you familiar with the carbs on the 79 or just the DOHC carbs in general, I was hoping you could help me out. I'm trying to test out the pilot channels in the carbs that and empty out through a hole between the throttle plates and the engine. The carbs were sitting around for a while without filters on before I bought the bike and I'm worried there's junk in there that circuit. Have any idea where the entrance is so I can blow air through there? Also, if it's clogged, how can I unstick them?

I don't understand the question.  Pics?
Do you mean the accelerator pump nipples?  Or the 3 little holes that are about the size of a spec of pepper?

Regardless, if you have the carbs out, why not just clean them?  Use an "E" string (I found that a 0.08 worked well for me) followed by a blast of carb cleaner.  Check the DOHC carb cleaning thread for more instructions.  Your carbs can't be too clean.

One of the small pepper sized holes is to the pilot bypass chamber, so a wire won't go very deep into it.

Yeah, that's what I ended up doing. I got a steel E-string and went to town on the carbs. Sorry about the wording of the question, it is pretty hard to explain without pics. I actually found a really wonderful 40-page walkthrough on CB750 dohc carbs that teaches you not only how to properly clean all the passages in the carbs, but also how to test them to make sure they're clear. I think it also gave me a good solution for my overflowing carbs--- but I won't know til I get my 3 new air cutoff valves in the mail and can reassemble the carbs for testing.
