1980 750k spark units black goo

James
hi above the battery two silver pieces with electrical connections i think are the spark units. i took my battery out and noticed some sort of black sticky tar like goo. it appears to have oozed from the spark units then run down and pooled a bit under the battery. what's up with that ? thanks.

I have heard of this happening. I think it is just due to age, and heat. Sometimes storage buildings get pretty hot in the summer.

thanks for the reply. i have put in a new battery now. i just scrapped all the tar out with a flathead from the batter box area. my bike is not running well. it will start fine but will not idle unless i nurse the gas. as soon as i stop the gas it dies. so i am trying to rule things out. the battery measured 12.38 Volts while running so i am going to start looking at other systems on the bike next. what do you suggest air or fuel ? thanks all help me get riding this season !

Your pilot jets are plugged. You will need to give the carbs a through cleaning. There is a thread here somewhere about cleaning the carbs your bike has. Just put DOHC carb in the search box.

The black goo leaking will eventually lead to the spark unit failing completely. Some guys have filled it up with silicon sealer but best to source new units so that you don't have an unexpected failure.
