1980 CB750F valve cover bolt stripped.... plz help!

spartan8ball
Hello!

I recently obtained a 1980 Honda cb750f supersport in good shape, with one minor flaw.  Seems an outer valve cover bolt-hole is stripped.  To make matters worse, seems most of the other ones were also stripped and repaired with a heli-coil, however this one stripped the heli-coil as well.  I have a 6mm heli-coil, but the bolt hole is to big to tap for the 6mm, and it uses a special gasket bolt.  I noticed that the bolt resided in a camshaft bearing, not the cylinder head itself, so at least the head is not screwd.... anybody know of a fix other than replacing the camshaft bearing?  (and if not, are the bearings available individually or as a set, how much, and where can I get them from?)

Also, minor question:  The fuel valve, when the bike ignition is OFF, allows fuel to leak out of the carburetors (little nipples at the bottom) unless I manually shut it off.  The bike will also run quite well with the fuel shutoff valve in the OFF position.  I would assume this is a bad fuel valve?

Thank you in advance for your help.  If I can get this thing to stop leaking oil like the exxon valdez, I can get it inspected and share some pictures/experiences!

Thanks,
Chris

You could drill larger and get a thread repair insert (hard, not helicoil) be sure to loctite in.
The tank valve is bad as well as your needles in the carbs. I dont remember if you can tighten the tank valve. I can leave the fuel on on my bike with no leaks out the carb.

Thanks for the help?  Any thought on where to get a hard insert?  The auto-parts stores around my place only have them for spark-plug hole sizes...

well guys, its fixed.  I removed the bearing, filled the bolt hole with JB weld, let dry overnight, drilled, tapped, and heli-coiled.  So far its holding.  I'm not impressed with JB weld.  It was tough as metal until I drilled it, at that point it got very flaky.

But at least my head is not leaking oil!!!  thanks for the help!

Even i'm facing the same problem with my bike, i've tried with various methods but failed to repair it. Now i'm left with no other option other than going for a new one. Please do reply if you have any suggestions to rectify the problem.

If the JB weld wouldn't have held, my next step would have been to take the camshaft bearing to a machine shop, have them weld it solid and re-drill/tap it there.  If that didn't work (or was too expensive) the only other alternative would be to replace the bearing, although I doubt they are available individually.

I'm having the same issue. I've got everything working except this last problem. I just tried fixing with heli-coils only to realize it had already been tried on this engine by a previous owner. My next step is going to be http://www.threadtoolsupply.com/m6x1-e-z-lok-thread-repair-kit.html and if that doesn't work, some JB weld or something. Will let you know how it goes.
