1980 cb750 with 1996 cbr600f3 rear wheel conversion questions

Okay, I am still in the planning stage for my bike. I am thinking about putting the rear wheel from a 1996 cbr600f3 on my cb750. I like the oreo look and want the wider rear wheel etc. Pluss I like the modern look as well. Do i try to find a 48 tooth rear sprocket (I currently have a 17 front 48 rear set up that I really like). I have seen some for the cbr600 but they do seem a specialty sprocket maybe for stunters on a cbr600. I imagine I would stay with the same gearing no matter what rear wheel I have on there right?

The other question would be, I also like the old school spoked look. Can I find a wider rear rim, and lace it up to my stock hub? That would probably be less of a headache than fixing up a cbr600 rear wheel. Thanks guys!

When swapping a wheel, forget about the gearing on the bike the wheel came off of. The gearing on the donor bike will not apply to the bike the wheel is going on. There could be differences in the transmission gears, and powerband that affect the gearing between the two bikes. Now when swapping the wheel and figuring the gearing, you must consider the diameter of the tires, as this will affect the gearing. If the tire has a smaller diameter, you will want to raise (lower# ratio) the gear ratio, if the tire has a larger diameter, you will want to lower (higher# ratio) the gear ratio.
As for the spoke wheel, yes you can lace a wider rim to your hub. However if you really want that large fat tire look, it is easier to achieve by putting a larger tire on a narrow rim. This make the tire look really big and fat.

Perfect thanks. That's sort of what I had in mind, gearing wise. With the fatter tire, I am putting a Yamaha R1 front end on my bike. The Yamaha front wheel is 3" wide while my stock rear wheel is I think 1.5" wide. I would rather have more balance by putting a 5" wide rear tire (of course if it all fits and I can get the chain lined up nicely) to go with a 3" wide front tire.

As for the spokes, I'll probably try to build a front and rear wheel with the existing rear hub and get one of those nifty Cognito Moto conversion front hubs. They look so nice!

And not recommended by a lot of folks, including one of the Buchanans I spoke with last week. While it's possible, and you might get away with it 99 times out of 100, it's safer to run the wider wheel with the tire.

I was not saying "put a 300 mm tire on a 2.5" rim" which would definitely be unsafe. You can put a larger, to a degree tire on your stock rims and be perfectly safe. Buchanans is in the business to sell rims and spokes. Because of that they are going to recommend you buy new parts from them. Also they would not want to have the liability of telling you to put larger tires on your rims in case something did go wrong.

I have done some research and have found that a stock 5" Harley rim will lace up to a stock DOHC sprocket. You can find these used online pretty cheap.
It's only illegal if you get caught.

If at first you don't succeed, use more lighter fluid

95% of Harley Davidsons ever made are still on the road... The other 5% made it home.

This^

Just check the spoke count. The F3 rim you mention is a 5.5'' rim, btw. Some Harley's are running 17's out back, so sport bike profiles are possible with that.
