1980 cb900c frame with a cb750 engine?

jrt0808
Hello,

I'm new to the foroum and tommorow I will.be buying a 1980 cb900c. The guy says the bike is in a really good shape (but after looking at some pics it seems just decent) and evehttp://lasvegas.en.craigslist.org/mcy/4399139232.htmlrything works. The only problem is that a connecting rood broke and made a hole on the engine. I wish to turn the bike into a cafe racer.

Ive research everywhere but cant seem to find an answer, will a cb750 engine mount on a cb900c frame?

I've done some research and all I can find is that the mounts are on the same place but the 750 engine is solid mounted and the 900 is on rubber mount Idk if that be a problem. On a comment half cap mention that the 900 frame is a little bigger to accomodate for the Drive shaft and the swing arm is shorted. will this be a problem?

Since the cb750 engine is a chain drive i will like to know if there will be a problem since the 900 is a chain drive? And will anything be offset due to this?

Thank you in advance

I apologize if I'm asking dumb questions. I'm more of a car guy but I been wanting a motorcycle for a while and i since this one is cheap($200) i wamt to give it a go.

Got me on that one guy, but for 200, and with what you want to do, I would think it's the perfect candidate.

If it were any CB 900 model other then the "C" I would say "Go for it," but since the C has the driveshaft, and it is incorporated into the swingarm, and swingarm mounting, you are going to have a LOT OF WORK to convert to chain drive. I would just try to find a "CB 900 C" model engine for it.

As Tools said the 900C is shaft drive. The frame is also longer to accomidate the 10 speed transmission. and I would have to double check on mine the make sure, but I believe the output shaft is ion the opposite side due to the extra tranny. I'd save myself alot of headaches and just find a 900C engine.

thank you everybody for the quick reply. i don't think i have enough time to do conversion but i really want it to be a cafe. So i might just buy it and restore it a little and give it to my dad. all i should need is the connecting rod and the case right?

is there any other parts that might need to be rebuild?

Didn't Half-Caf do something like this once?

IIRC, he used a 750 (chain drive) frame and tried to convert a 900 engine to the chain drive trans. With not 100% success. I remember he dang near got it done though.

If you want to do a cafe than a 900c is the wrong bike anyways. It's a heavy bike, power to weight is the same as a 750. Pluse with the duel shift tranny makes it hard if you decide to do set back controls. Not trying to bust your ideas (hell I have a 900C and I love it), just tryin to give you some good advise,

Good luck with whatever you decide.
