1982 Cam Chain

markalward
I am helping a friend with his bike.  A 1982, DOHC, he is concerned about the rattle in the timing chain, about 65000 Km.  Can this be tightened, or does it need to be.  Is the rattle part of the beast.  Should the chain be replaced?
Thanks

It should have two bolts, one in front, one in back, that should be loosened, then tightened, to automatically adjust the timing chain tension.  Check the manual, available on the home page of this sight, for instructions on how to adjust this.

Adjustment is critical, and it is routine maintenance.  If it is ignored, major engine damage can result.  As far as changing it goes, I could not advise you on that.  Cheers!

Thanks, after I posted I checked the manual and learned that adjustment.  I found out he already did it.  I am thinking syncronizing the carbs is a good idea.  The bike starts and runs on two cylinders for while, then the other two kick in, then you take the choke off.

Thanks again for your post.

There are two adjustments: one for the crank to cam chain and the other for the between the 2 cams chain.the procedure in the fsm details this nicely.

regarding the rattle: I think you are on the right path for the carb sync. Lots of methods out there. Try and find someone with a morgan carb tune or the 4 gauges setup. Either will work well.

Good luck and keep us updated.

I have this set. It's well worth the money. I have seen this same set for 2Xs the money on some parts sites.

It's amazing how loud the cam chain will be if the carbs are out of sync.

Nothing "retarded" about your statement.  Get a copy of the Factory Service Manual at the home page of this forum.  Turn to chapter 3, page 11, and follow the instructions.

You could also do a search for "cam chain" or "cam chain adjust" on the forum and read through those results.

And it appears that you're a new arrival to this forum.  Welcome.  Your input is appreciated.
