So I decided since I have some free time to invest into a new project I would finally start building my second dream ride.....a 77 cb750f. Of course after too many weeks spent "on the line" searching craigslist all over the Floridian area I said screw it, maybe I'll save that for another time and quickly changed parameters to anything in a close range of what I wanted. Hell I can still build something awesome and then just give it to my wife to ride because I still have my BSA. HAhahaha, who am I kidding, I just love bikes so I threw $300 at a kid who was trying to lie through his teeth and saying the battery was dead and came home with this two weeks ago.

Figured worst case I'm paying for a frame and a title I could build up from but I was hoping for a running motor to match it Aside from the impeding anxiety attacks of overthinking the whole build I'm feeling hopeful

It's very...interesting. Looks like someone tried to do a bob of some sort.

Aside from the awesome headlight which was btw wired by imaginary cables, the speedo which was destroyed from within itself (its like a bomb went off in it but didnt break the glass?), seat which was just sitting on top of the bike.....take a good look at the rear suspension, looks kinda low mounted eh? wtf, it's going to be an ugly duck type of story I suppose. So lets get this duck naked!
Starting to make some progress, added this weird stuff called oil to it which gave me chills of fear and anger due to the fact that someone most likely drove this ugly duck with no blood in her veins. Next I checked the sorry excuse for dried, half corroded spark plugs and said to myself, it's only a frame and title pretend like this motor isnt even part of the end result. Replaced all four with new NGK dr8es-l's and tried to kick her over.......got no where fast. Finger banged the carbs and felt em slide freely and felt a little warm all over so I drained the oil opened her up and wrench back and forth till i felt some cylinder movement. Started feeling better so I moved on to the tank and had ample gas flow so I went back to the carb and drained and free'd up and cleaned up some remnant of what was once gas  and went back to starting position again. This time there was a rumble, then another, then she came alive!

She may have come alive but the tapping sounds made me feel bad for the little duckie

Yup the PO definitely did his best to customize it to his own tastes. I hate the fact that there's screw holes now in the lower rear of the swingarm and question the integrity of it now but I'm going to set those thoughts aside because a used one is cheap enough on ebay. Like you said, 300, can't go wrong.

So can anyone help with some info on the following engine code, I'm just having a feeling she's "NO-SO ORIGALE"

Looks just like a 79-83 DOHC engine serial number to me.

and the saga continues......time to get dirty and dismember the duck! goals are:

1) remove motor
2) disconnect front and rear suspension
3) degrease everything!!!
4) shave all useless tabs and smooth down
5) find the knock

I battle ADHD  so I will be in NO WAY sticking t o that order of operations but will try to as best as I can

have to admit the lowered rear was driving me ape SH@T, so I had to just correct that and leave it mocked up so when I walk in my garage I'm not greeted with the sight of some sort of ugly ass bobber-like thing

the 4 little hellions came off without a fuss and I know I'm gonna catch flack for the pods but for now they gotta stay. Keeping it moving although it's 93 degrees out and the fan is doing no more than blowing my sweat into my eyes

there goes my harness from hell...... it's enough to get the bike running but there's literally nothing there for hi/lo lights....I'm pretty set on not doing turn signals so I dont care too much about those but hi/lo and brake lights are a must. I'm thinking of cutting a simplified harness with an emphasis on simplified!

Off with your head!!! Kept the rear on for no other reason than the fact that I was just too hot and wanted to get the motor out, put the water down and grab a corona

EUREKA!!! Now I was thinking about the swingarm cause I got a second wind but then chased my dogs around trying to retrieve my drivers they were stealing. By the time I got back in the garage I had forgotten where I left off.....that's going to happen a lot....a lot! So I busted out the angle grinder, always sounds like a good idea in any situation. Cut some cover tabs, shaved some cover tabs, removed the helmet lock but preserved it for future use. I kind of want to keep and re-weld certain original bits of the bike, just relocate them so not to be so noticeable i.e. the original ignition and helmet lock.


 In time I'm sure I'll figure something out. I'm getting excited to get this girl degreased, stripped down and re-sprayed. She's gonna be a black/red/grey color scheme I'm drawing up at work while I should be focusing on other matters. Going GSXR front, and gsxr rear wheel conversion kit but keep the original swingarm. New springs and too many other floating ideas that keep me up at night. So I was like screw it, tomorrows a new day I'll take up where I'm leaving off today.......then this happened:

Oh man. You need an engine. You know a SOHC will bolt right into your frame.

So before I call it a night I find myself wondering, I can open the casing up and fully inspect and reassemble every inch of her to stock specs (which is going to happen either way) or can I sneak in a few mods to increase some pep in her step? What avenues would you go during the rebuild to make this motor just a bit ballsier? Either way the pistons/cylinder/rods and god only knows what else I'll find in her belly will have to go to at least get her firing on all four again.Keep in mind, I'm not rich and I'm planning on getting engaged within the next few months to a great girl who supports me in everything I've ever wanted to do.

And I can point out some nuts&bolts and she'll happily turn a wrench, that's what I call winning.

I would start with finding another cylinder, however you could have that one re-sleeved, but that would be more money. Then get a Cycle-X oversize piston kit. After that you can install a set of CB 900 cams.

P.S. If you are anywhere near Kansas City, I have a good CB 750 DOHC engine I am thinking about parting with.
