1st project cb 750 custom 1980

wewelshman
i got my 1st project, i got the bike running after replacing the battery starter solanoid and cleaning the carbs.

theres just a few things left i need to sort. the middle two cylinders are miss firing still and im not sure why ,the plugs and leads work as have checked them first.

also the guy who sold it to me patched up the fuel tank with resin and its just all turning to gunk. im not sure whether its best to get it welded or get a new one, any advise?

and finaly both side panels are missing and would like to get replacements i dont mind if they're moulded ones, but i am kinda on a budget :(

Welcome to the forum. Since, you have spark, it must be a carburation problem. These carbs are really hard to get clean. I would start there.

Sounds like the resin from your gas tank is clogging your carbs.  No real use cleaning them until you get that fixed.

Weld vs. a new one is personal preference or budget.  Can you weld it, or do you have a friend that can?  Might be easier to get a cheap new one in good condition locally than it is to weld and coat.  Depends on your situation though.  You might not be able to find a cheap used tank in good condition.

I agree with Seestheday.Poo from the gas tank is probably fouling up the carbs.Good call Sees'!Finding someone to weld a fuel tank can be hard.No one around my area will touch a fuel tank of any kind with a welder unless you provide a reciept from having it boiled out first. You can have them boiled out at a radiator shop to eliminate the fumes and make it safe, but by the time you pay for that, pay a welder, drive all around town....you just paid for your replacement tank.Just my $0.02.  But,Welcome! What kind of bike do you have?

As far as what bike it is, I'm assuming it's a 1980 CB750 custom.  I got that from the Subject line.

There are tank liner kits available:  Kreem, and others.  Will seal small, pinhole type, leaks.

As far as side covers go, they are hard to find for C's.  My father has an '81/'82 Custom.  I found a perfect match side cover, off of e-Bay, paid more than I wanted, only to have it stolen last year (bike was not ridden, not sure how/when it was stolen, but it was...).  That is how commonly they fall off/are stolen.  It is usually the left side cover, that disappears.

Maier Mfg. makes side covers for some CB750 models, but not the Customs.  Sorry.

thanks for all the advise ive taken off the carbs and cleaned them out completly they're now just awaiting a new set of seals.

on the tank issue, i think im gunna strip it down as its still painted atm, and see all the damage and try and get quotes from some local welders and see if that works out cheaper than buying a shiney new one.

im looking in to getting a pair of side panels made as i know someone who runs his own cnc workshop. but if anyone can help me get some that would still be great.

i'll also post a picture of it before i started taking it apart as soon as i can
