#2 carb overflow drip, and not firing.

czechbiker
#2 cylinder will not run. I susspect a clogged slow speed jet. I'm going to take them off again to check for a clog. The #2 carb still drips from the overflow tube under the bowl. I changed and adjusted the float. My mannual calls for a setting of 15-16mm. Is this right? The needle valve and seat seem to be good. Any suggestions as to why this carb might overflow?

I'm assuming you already checked the drain screw. Even if you think you've got it tightened down all the way, there may be something stuck in there. You can check the integrity of the screw by pulling the bowl off, filling it, and letting it sit to see if it still drips. If it does, that's the only thing it can be. And sometimes it's hard to see if the rubber tips on the valves are worn. Best to just replace them if you've already gone through the trouble of pulling the carbs off. The K&L rebuild kits come with all the little bits you need for $20-$25 each.

15-16mm is correct for the float.

Thanks for the reply. As it turns out the leak came from tiny holes in the overflow tube. They were so tiny, I could not see them with my naked eye's. I found them by using soapy water and a plastic tube I connected to the overflow outlet stem. I blocked all the passages and could still blow slightly through the tube. I knew the leak was somewhere in the bowl. When the soapy water showed no bubbles in the bottom where the seal is, I just happen to see some bubbles forming on the sides of the overflow tube. I could not believe it. Oh well, Live and learn. There were many microscopic holes in the brass tube. I was able to seal it with epoxy.
Number 2 cylinder is now fireing. All cylinders now OK. Problem now is I can't get the engine to settle down to idle speed after reving a few times. I set the idle speed and then after a few revs ,the engine speeds off to 4000 revs and I have to reach down under the carbs to readjust the idle speed again. Is there some special way to set up the throtle cables, It seems pretty straight forward. Any Ideas????

You're making sure that the throttle return cable is connected, and that the linkage actually returns, right? Also, have you checked the integrity of your rubber boots on both sides of the carbs? You may have a vacuum leak.

Thanks for the reply Scott,
It turned out that the carbs sat dry a long time and corrosion caused very small holes,(not able to see with your eyes) in the overflow tubes. I found them accidently using soapy water while looking for leaks in the bowls. Fixed it with epoxy.

It's best to clean the tubes with 400 or or so sandpaper then solder up the holes with a solder gun.
