76 cb 750 points adj.????

brcree
Trying to ge the ol girl running again. Bought it from dude who said it ran for him...?????don't think so. While trying to adj points with claimer man. using small lights to tell me when points open, I noticed that the light came on way before f mark was ligned up.  To get it to run smoothly it looks as if I need to elongate the two slots on the bottom of the main plate to get enough adj. This can;t be correct.....can anyone help out?

The point gap is very critical here. Setting the gap is important before checking the timing.
bigger gap advances smaller gap retards the timing.
hope this helps.

The points will be open when you go past the F mark and line up the timing mark on the engine case with the peg the spring is hooked on. This is just past the F mark. If you have a dwell meter, this will show you how long the points are open to spec. I think I have mine set at .014". Also, make sure you have good spark and don't use anything but NGK plugs in these bikes. Check your cam chain adjustment to the book, it needs to be on the right stroke to set. You should not be clear to one side on the advance plate. You may have carb problems that whatever you do to the timing won't make it run right. Run some Seafoam in the gas and check carb sync too.

The points plate can turn, you just loosen the 2(or 3) screws. However there are 2 screws on each point. You loosen these and adjust them separately. So what you do is loosen the plate and the top set of points. Get it where it should be, THEN set gap on the point. At that point, you should be able to tighten down point 1 and the top screw on the plate. Set the bottom point now. I think thats how I did it. I never had an issue, it came naturally to me and so I never really kept track of how I did it. Heck I set point gap buy eyeball and it worked flawlessly.  But then I moved to a dynaS and points are a thing of the past!
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!
