78 750K Float bowl chamber air leak? Cause major issue?

ian277
Hi Everyone,

I've got a chip in my #2 float bowl chamber I've discovered after taking apart my carbs to be cleaned. The bike was running ok, but this looks pretty bad. Can anyone offer advice on how this will affect the performance or should I get a new chamber? When I put carb cleaner it is to clean it leaks, but haven't noticed it before pulling it from the bike.

It is not an air leak if gas is in the float bowl. It is a gas leak!

If you put carb cleaner into the float bowl and it leaks,  you will have to repair it or replace it.

If it was mine I would get a gas proof epoxy two part,(gas tank liner epoxy) and repair the hole.
Make sure you clean the area of the hole to bright shiny aluminum.
Should be fine - test it before using. Let the epoxy cure for a couple days.

I would use JB Weld on it.

Word of warning, do not use JB quik. That shit sucks and is not proof against gas. I found that one out.

+1 on the JB Weld. I've used it many times on non-structural parts like motorcycle case covers, float bowls (on Holley carbs) and pinholes in auto gas tanks. Gas and even ethanol don't seem to hurt it in my experience.

Yeah the jb weld is ok, it is their "quick set" stuff that doesn't cut it.

I have jb weld on the outside of my gas tank and it has held just fine.If you are looking for something runnier than jb weld-which would probably be good considering where you need to get it-i have used the two part epoxy from Permatex in every v8 i have ever built to retain lifter valley screens.Stuff holds on like a faat kid to a doughnut. Will not let go.Advance Auto stocks it.I have one engine now with over 500 dragstrip passes that is 4 years old and it still there.Jb Weld would work fine, but I think I would go with the Permatex for this particular area.Oh,we use it to sculpt cylinder head runners too,so i know it holds up well to heat and fuel( gasoline and alcohol),not just oil.
