Yeah bad idea all around, unless you want to do a LOT of carb tuning.
Mikey is right about the 79-83. The earlier bikes will work with them but it will take a lot of work.
You will most likely have to change jets on the 69-76 carbs. Problem is, there is not set guide on what jets you would need. So a chunk of cash would be spent. From there you have to tune both idle and mains and the needle position.
On the 77/78, jets usually dont need to be changed(sometimes they do) but you still have to monkey a lot with tuning.
If you actually get the bike to run decent you may suffer from crossdrafts from wind which cause cut outs.
Rain becomes an issue. You also need to support the back of the carbs as the airbox does that normally.
If you do get pods, get good ones. The cheap ebay ones are junk. If you get any, get k&n. Expensive but they are the best bet if you want them to work.
A final note, contrary to popular opinion, pods rarely increase your performance. They might look fast but on a stock engine, you wont get much.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!
