Another carb tuning/ jetting question

I just found this forum today and it seems to have some more knowledgeable people and less know it alls than some other sites.
Here's my issue. I decided to put K&N pods on my '76 CB750K. It has an aftermarket 4-2 exhaust but isn't a race setup. As best I can remember the jets are stock right now and the engine is stock other than ignition set up. I removed the air box and put the pods on and went for a test ride.
At idle and light acceleration it seems the same but once you get just past the light acceleration it starts to bog and wide open isn't much better. Now I've learned that the Keihin carbs don't do the best with pods.
Should I start by raising the needle or increasing jet size?
I really like the look of the pods vs the stock box. Later I plan on rebuilding the engine and possibly going with the 836cc kit. If I do that I'll probably put different carbs on.

If the best option is to change to a direct slide carb, what should I go with? I'd rather get something used and rebuild it.

Are the stock carbs for the K6 not direct slide? I read earlier, somewhere, that they were vacuum actuated.

The 76 (K-6) should have "roundtop carbs" which are great carbs and should work well with the K&N pods. Check out the "Water Buffalo" build by Shinyribs. He went through jetting for pods with his roundtop carbs there.

Yeah, read Shiny's thread. The 76 came with slide carbs, the only way they wouldn't be there is if someone replaced them and there is no reason to do that unless engine work had been done to hop it up.

Your symptoms are classic of a too lean mix. As TOOLS said, you carbs will work perfectly fine with pods once jetted properly. All the carbs on the sohc 750 work fine with pods.

However, if your plan is to do an 836, then put the airbox on and leave it till you are ready, otherwise you'll be doing the jetting a second time.

Also, when you do the 836, make sure you get the head ported, otherwise you won't get nearly as much out of your build.
