Bike won't start after wash

theoldbluehouse
Hello everyone,
I washed my bike last week being careful and not getting the top wet etc. Just sprayed the rims basically.
After that I tried to start it and it wouldn't right away. On the third attempt it ran but crappy and finally shut off. The battery looked fine, lights, all looked good.
I let it dry for a couple of days and nothing! So I took out spark plugs (iridium) and they looked black and wet, replaced them with new ones (non-iridium), and nothing. Took the points cover off (cyclex-ignition) and blew on it for a few minutes, nothing. I even depleted the battery trying to start it.
Today I noticed one of the carbs had leaked overnight as I left the petcock in the reserve position by mistake. Could this be the problem?
I've been trying to figure it out and can't seem to find the problem, help please!!

First charge the battery. These bikes will not run with a dead battery. Then check to see if you are getting spark at the plugs. I would bet that you got the old , and I mean old plug wires wet and they are grounding out.

Thank you Tools. I will do that tonight, I have my battery charging and got a spare one just in case.
I did look for spark but didn't see any a couple of days ago. It was daytime though, someone suggested I try at night, so let's see...

took apart the plug caps, trimmed off a bit, blew dry air and placed back together, nothing.
Put new spark plugs, no spark. Coils and plug wire ends look fine I don't understand what could be going on.
I just don't see a spark, the bike spins fine, lights are all good and battery 12.4v

I assume you are grounding the plug to the engine while checking for spark. Next check to see if you are getting voltage to the coils. Remove the tank and check the black wire to the coils with a test light.

Re: Bike won't start after wash

So I placed a test light to the power cable that goes direct into the coils, turned key on and it lights up.
Now with the key on and the tester on touching the red cable that goes into the coil I turn my kill switch on and the light cuts out, turn it on and the light goes on.
So this means the switch is good right? and the problem is elsewhere?
Anyway, if so my conclusion is that power is going to the coils but something is happening inside that prevents the spark.
Could it be the coils went bad or the CDI ignition system (not points) went bad?

I think the CDI might have a problem. Both coils would not go bad at the same time.

Dyna coils or stock?

Dyna coils have been known to burnt out ( Dyna strongly points this out) if you dont give them a place to discharge. Meaning, if you pull a plug wire off and push a plug in it to test for spark and you DON'T keep the plug base grounded to the engine, you can kill a coil.

Which I think is silly. Plug wire happens to come off while riding and it snuffs out your coil? Boo....
