Blown main fuse

215Guy
So I'm assuming, or maybe just hoping that there is a simple fix to this, or something that I'm just overlooking since I'm not so good with electrical stuff, but here is my problem.  I blew the main fuse on my 81 cb750 custom recently.

Based on what I had seen on this forum, and others, I decided to try and install a fuse holder with a modern fuse instead of the old blade fuse that the bike originally had.  With the holder connected to the main fuse box, I got nothing.  No power transfer at all, and no reaction when trying to start, no lights on or anything.

Before the main fuse blew, all the electrical seemed fine, and I have yet to find connectors that look particularly corroded or worn.  The battery reads a little over 12 when hooked up.  If i meter directly from the battery connectors on the main fuse box, I get the same reading.  When I meter from the positive contact, to the opposite end of the fuse connection, it drops to 0.

It all seems so simple that I'm not really sure how to go about trouble shooting it.  I've attached picture.  the connections you see here are just for picture sake, I did have it connected more properly when I was testing it.  Thanks for any help.

From what I can see it looks like you are testing across the solenoid. That is a direct connection to the battery, so it should have voltage. If I am just guessing here because I do not have much experience with the DOHC bikes, but I have worked on some that have a little metal strip that is a fused link mounted by the solenoid. I would look to see if it has that. It might have blown. I have replaced them with wire in blade type fuse holders, and blade type circuit breakers. I never run a fuse on the main, always a circuit breaker.

It did in fact originally have the strip of fused metal, and that is what blew, which is why I was trying to replace it with the fuse holder.  Seemed like a simple replacement, but the new in line fuse holder with the bladed fuse doesnt seem to be doing anything.

Can you get a better picture of how you connected it?

I can try, later tonight after reconnecting it. I took it off to try and run some tests and reassess the problem.  It was linked on the direct connect for the main fuse box out to the positive side of the batter and then to the spot where the other side of the fused blade would have gone.  If that helps, but I will try and get better pictures as soon as I can.

You need to connect it to where the fused link connected on both sides. It looks like you have one end connected to the solenoid, and the other to one terminal on the fused link, but I was not sure until you said one end was on the battery.
