Broken Primary Chain tensioner? See picture

surfish95747
Hey guess. Can you take a look at this picture and tell me what you think? I had a moment a few weeks ago on my 1980 cb750k where it reved real high and I didn't feel like I had power to the wheels. I was thinking the clutch just slipped, but after I pulled over, shifted through the gears and started rolling slowly again, it felt like there was gravel in the roll. I pulle dthe oil pan and this is what was in the bottom. My time working on cars has told me it is bad to see metal shavins in the bottom, and now I am thinking plastic pieces mean it is a tensioner that broke. I just rebuilt the top end and the two top tensioners were pretty okay. What do you all think.

Hard to tell exactly what it is/ I would start doing more exploratory surgery.

Okay here is a picture looking up through the bottom of the engine. Actually the tensioner looks fine.

It's that a metal foot riding directly on the chain? That couldn't be right. Probably oughta have a plastic runner/ chain guide in there to separate the two....

How did it compare to the FSM?

No shiny sorry, the light was shining right on it. That is the plastic foot running along the chain.

This is what it looks like outside of the bike.

Ah, ok. The slipper does look to be intact.

The FSM doesn't go in to detail ( that I can find), but there appears to be some sort of cushion in this red circle. Kinda like the cush drive in the rear hub, I think there is a cush between the primary shaft and the clutch hub?

Might be worth looking in to. If that is a rubber cush, maybe over the years it has hardened to be something that may resemble plastic?

Oh man, the best stuff ever. It is a Qalo ring and its made out of silicon. It has lasted extremely well with all the chemicals that I've subjected it too. They do have a line for those that work with chemicals specifically to last longer with those. I don't even feel it there. Plus if it gets caught on something it wont rip my finger off.

I think what I will do, From looking outside in the tensioners seem to be okay. The clutch is getting a new Barnett clutch everything. I will put the carbs back together, clutch together and get the bike out on the road again and diagnose while I ride. After I get some more miles on it I will pull the oil pan off again and see if it is something I am screwing up or if it was something that was in the bottom of the pan previously.

That sounds like a plan. It might just heel itself, or just destroy the whole engine. I love it!

Haha, yeah, the only one I have right now, besides tearing apart the whole engine. Which maybe I should do. I don't know.

Tools, really what would you suggest. Do you think I should pull the engine again and take it all apart again to see if there is a problem? I realize that is probably the best thing to do, but I don't know what I want to do at this point.

Oh another thing I just noticed is the circled black piece is a long sliver of plastic that I tried to pull out but is still attached. It kind of looks like its being shaved off of the tensioner block? I don't know. I should probably just tear it down and cry.
