Buying second hand 1982 CB750F

!!!Wolverine!!!
Hi all

I am new to this forum and would just like to say its a brilliant forum.

I am looking at purchasing a 1982 CB750F. the pics look brilliant... but thats the pics... they guy says that its in 100% original condition and rides like a dream. he is quite far from me, so I will be making a trip to see him in a few weeks. My dad had one of these and said it is a brilliant bike.

I need some advice on what i should look for in terms of making a good buy. What are common problems and issues that i should keep an eye out for when inspecting the bike?

Thanks

One tip is to check the engine when you get there to see if it's warm.  If so, he may have cranked it and let it run to warm it up so it would crank easier for you!!

2nd the check to see if its warm.  However, These bikes can be hard to start after sitting, so hard to say If I'd blame him if that's all it is.

See if the charging system is good.  Simple test, Rev up to 2000+ rpm and see if light gets brighter.

Ask about valve adjustment.  When was it done?  When cold (even worse if warm) does the bike spudder while revving?

Take good look into tank

Look for exhaust smoke

Look at and smell the engine oil...Smelling burnt or heavy of gas isn't good.

etc

ZAR18000? What's that in real money?

[Sorry, that's my uppity NA attitude showing through]. Honestly . . . what's the conversion rate?

Looks like a great bike, though!

That's kinda high actually... the kelly blue book value on one of these is around $1400 in good condition. Of course, that's the North American value... perhaps it's worth more in other parts of the world. Still, that bike would have to be in excellent shape for me to even consider paying a grand over what it's valued at.

I was actually gona offer the guy $2000 which is R15000. I think the price structure is different here in South Africa. Generally, you can only pick up a messed up bike for $1400- R10000. or like a small 125cc or 180cc 2nd hand.

It's also entirely possible that your currency is more stable than ours at the moment. I keep my nose out of those kinds of things though, so I have no idea. But it's a sweet looking bike, and if the price is on par with other bikes of similar condition that are available in SA, then it's probably fair.

Hi All

It's been a while. I have gone this weekend to see the bike (It's almost on the other side of the country). The bike is as the picture. Lovely bike, very smooth. A few issues though. My dad had one, so he test rode it.

1. The bike didn't have a lot of power on take off.. but after reving it up a bit, the power was there.

2. The rev's at 100km/h was sitting at 7000rpm... but that stabilised after the reving as well.

3. The steering seems to want to turn when you take a bend. Is this normal? older tech? My dad is used to a GSXR1000 K7 with steering damper etc, he says that could be why he felt it was doing this.

Other then that, the bike is in absolutely lovely condition.

Please reply soon as I have to put in an offer ASAP,

Thanks a mil
