Bypassing air cutoffs

So i was just reading the dohc carb manual, and was debating bypassing the air cutoffs (mine could probably use replacing). How many of you have done this and what are your experiences? It sounds good (saving 60 bucks), but he mentions there may be some popping on deceleration.  I would probably buy the cutoffs just to avoid that (i like my bike sounding like a well tuned machine). Thoughts?

Mine are bypassed.  I sometimes get a little gurgle but have never had a loud pop or backfire on decel.  Was dropping off a mountain on an 8% grade today and was on and off the throttle all the way down.  No backfires.

Just bypassed all of mine.  It was running reasonably well, but when I split the bank I found that almost all of my air cutoff diaphrams were in very rough shape.  A few pinholes in some of them.

I'm expecting a performance increase.
