Pretty tardy on the updates, so time for a picture dump. Starting building a new fairing setup from an LED 4x6 light, chinese speedo and a DRZ400 cowl. Put some finishing touches on some things and some powdercoat on some others.
Can see where I adjusted my technique midway around the patch.
Made a button to hold the magnet for the speed sensor. All press fit, so it's removable. Have to drill a vent hole on blind holes or the air compresses and won't let the part seat.
Discovered that a CBR600 F2 ignition switch bolts to the yokes and the steering lock works. A F3 switch does also, but the helmet lock on F3's is bulky. Buying a F2 setup off ebay gives you a helmet lock with matching key that bolts right to the stock location. Avoid the vintage pricing this way. This switch/helmet lock was $16. Too early to say what's up with the wiring, though it looks very straight forward.
Cowl assembly stuffs.
Pattern for cutting out some Kydex I have on the way.
Gauge goes in to stealth mode when off.
As does the headlight.
To support the weight of the light inside the cowl and allow them to pivot together for aiming.
Cable outlet angle of the stock perch clashed with the gauge, so used a MSR setup that was on my dirtbike before it went hydraulic. Cable run is good now, but I had to put a ball back on the end to match the other side.
Shifter linkage is sorted.
And brake side is sorted with brake light switch installed in the original FZ location.
Welded on some tabs to my tag bracket to add signals out back. Signals are similar in style to stock, but much smaller. Set of 4 from ebay for $8.99...you can't beat that.
Couldn't find a pair of stock grab rails, and I can't bend tubing sharp enough to recreate them at home. Then I decided the stock rails are ugly and I'd make my own anyway.
Didn't take many pictures of building it, but I knew what I wanted in my mind. I didn't want a flat slab of metal or a plain tube, I wanted something that looked like it had been cast or forged. So after I had the basic shape of the rail built I welded a piece of roundstock on to create a rib. Also added material in certain corners to try to create the cast-look and get away from looking like a bent piece of flat stock. Also didn't clean the metal real well, so there's some flaws and pores in the surface, which helps add to the cast look IMO. Hard to photograph, but I'm very happy with this. Also had a lot of fun sculpting it.
Made from an old t-square I found at the scrap yard
The rib also serves a practical purpose of preventing your straps from migrating when criss-crossed. You know how it is.
Real happy with the result, but not looking forward to building the other side. Making two of something always sucks. The challenge is over at that point and it just feels monotonous. Currently waiting on some vinyl to show up that will be used to doll up the cowl, Kydex for the cowl surround and a waterproof USB port. Once those come in I can finalize the fab work on the cowl and strip the bike down to start finish work on the chassis.
Need to find some suitable hose to replumb the oil cooler. Couldn't trust the hoses from 1983 to keep my oil in and off my tires.
The F3 master cylinder and MSR clutch perch took a little over 18oz off the bike, but I'll just call that a honest pound. So one more lb for the tally.
Current tally- $550
Pounds lost- 73
I need more funds so I can make more progress! I am currently accepting donations.
Also would like to find a fuel gauge for the tank in case anyone has anything laying around that looks like it may jive with the shape of the tank. Just trying to get an idea on which direction to start shopping.
