CB750 K1 - Gear changes

Syd
Gear changes - would appreciate your thoughts on the the following. My K1 has been completely rebuilt with many new parts including the clutch and cables etc. Changing gear is very clunky, specially between 2-3rd gear and also its hard to find neutral when stopped. I checked out the clutch actuator adjustment and the cable adjustment as per the workshop manual and apart from a slight adjustment, its all set up fine.

As stated above, neutral is hard to find when the engine in running. If you use the kill switch to stop the engine when you are stationary, finding neutral is then no problem (sort of seems like a clutch issue?). When you start the bike, the back wheel does not spin, therefore I assume the clutch set up is fine. The clutch is presently adjusted so that the clutch comes into play at the upper end of the clutch lever release - is this correct or is this problem normal for an early model CB750's?

What you describe is a clutch problem. The clutch is not totally disengaging. Have the clutch plates been replaced?

New clutch fitted approx 2,350 miles ago when the engine received a complete overhaul with genuine Honda clutch plates. What about a sticking clutch problem, however I have been on a couple of 200-250km rides recently which should rule this out.

Pretty much describes the clutches on both of my bikes. Also sound like what most people say theirs feel like. These old bikes do shift clunky and neutral can be nearly impossible to find sitting still. Somewhat intended though. Keeps you from accidentally hitting neutral when shifting from first to second. IMO, its just nature of the beast.

These bikes are NOT supposed to go into neutral from 1st, only from 2nd!
How much of the adjusting screw is sticking out of the lock-nuts? If it is less then 1/8 inch, you have a problem.

Re: CB750 K1 - Gear changes

Once adjusted at the lock nuts, there is still plenty of adjustment length in the screw. The screw is adjusted until just touching and backed off as per the manual and then adjusted at the cable. As stated earlier, the clutch works right and the end of the lever action - is this correct or should this action be mid to 3/4 of the lever action?

You sort of feel the need to turn the screw in a little further to see if this will help make gear changing smoother?

The end of the lever should only move about 1/4 inch to take up slack, and then start pulling the cable.

And your thoughts on adjusting the adjustment screw in a bit further to solve the problem?

Others on here have way more experience than I do on the 750s but just in general on bikes with wet multi plate clutches I've seen gear change issues caused by oil level, oil viscosity and oil that needs to be replaced. Maybe none of these apply in your case but I thought I'd mention it. Good luck!

Do not adjust the screw any further in then the factory recommended setting, you could wear out the clutch plates by causing them to slip.

There's your problem! Put some real oil in it, like Texaco Havoline 10w 40.

I've found that thicker oil helps with how the gears feel in these bikes. I use 20w-50. Honda calls for 20w-50 in all of the owners manuals I have.

Indeed a confusing question about oil. Not sure about changing from Specto 10w-40 mineral oil to another 10w-40 mineral oil from Havoline. They can't be that different surely? A thicker 20w-50 oil is mentioned in the link below for older engines and I can understand how a thicker oil could make a difference, however my engine is really all new. Interesting..

I think Tools was asking if mineral oils and petroleum based oils are the same thing. Petro based oils are fine for these clutches, synthetics are not. Some syn's are OK,but you'd have to research which ones.

New engine or not, when Honda was selling these bikes new they were recommending either 30w or 20w-50. The thicker for warm climates, the thinner for colder.
