Hell that is not so bad. It is pretty common really. Hell, my bike's frame and engine seriously need painting. It just happens. Thankfully, I am not going for a restored bike.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

A tip for reinstalling the engine. lay the engine on it's right side on something soft (old carpet works great). then set the frame over the engine. Put in some bolts, and tip it up. Works pretty good. Can be done by only one person, but is best with two.

That's a great tip.  Reminds me of removing big block engines from shoebox Chevys (1955-1957).  Take off the whole front clip (hood, fenders, front crosspiece), then pull the engine and trans.

Love it when Chip Foose and his crew do that.  Seems like a whole lot of work, but it saves lots of time.
