Changed out the clutch components the other day...wound up using the same friction plates as they had plenty of meat on them, but the pressure plate was worn shiny smooth and one of the metal plates (1st one from the pressure plate) had turned a little blue, so I used all the metal plates, the clutch basket and the pressure plate I took out of the parts bike I had all cleaned up. Also used the new EBC heavy duty clutch springs. Helen Black no longer has a slipping clutch!
So Monday was in the low 70's so went out on Blacksnake Rd. one of my new-found favorite scenic/twisty roads! Then back home for a little tweak on the clutch adjustment and lunch. Back out for a leisure ride when all of a sudden an oncoming vehicle turned to make a left turn right in front of me! Had to slam on the brakes and while the rear did a little sliding to the right while screeching I was counter steering and easing up on the front brake and then let go of the rear when I was pointed to the rear of the car now hurrying to get out of my way. I at one point was facing directly at the driver of the car behind the one that turned in front of me and could see the look of horror on his face. Just as quickly as it happened I was downshifted and heading straight down the road again ...and said "thank you God"!
Even with the headlight and running lights on, drivers are looking for other "cars" they just don't seem to see a motorcycle. With all the distracted drivers out there...it's even more critical that we drive as defensibly as possible. I am still in the first 500 miles of getting back in the saddle since 1972! I am so glad that the "instinct" was still there!
In 1972 I had to make a choice...quit riding...or quit drinking. God says it's safe to get back in the saddle now...at least I'm still alive...and feel more alive with the wind in my face! Now riding "Helen Black"...1982 CB750SC.
