Cagers just don't see us!

mikefootusa
Changed out the clutch components the other day...wound up using the same friction plates as they had plenty of meat on them, but the pressure plate was worn shiny smooth and one of the metal plates (1st one from the pressure plate) had turned a little blue, so I used all the metal plates, the clutch basket and the pressure plate I took out of the parts bike I had all cleaned up.  Also used the new EBC heavy duty clutch springs.  Helen Black no longer has a slipping clutch!

So Monday was in the low 70's so went out on Blacksnake Rd.  one of my new-found favorite scenic/twisty roads!  Then back home for a little tweak on the clutch adjustment and lunch.  Back out for a leisure ride when all of a sudden an oncoming vehicle turned to make a left turn right in front of me!  Had to slam on the brakes and while the rear did a little sliding to the right while screeching I was counter steering and easing up on the front brake and then let go of the rear when I was pointed to the rear of the car now hurrying to get out of my way.  I at one point was facing directly at the driver of the car behind the one that turned in front of me and could see the look of horror on his face.  Just as quickly as it happened I was downshifted and heading straight down the road again ...and said "thank you God"!

Even with the headlight and running lights on, drivers are looking for other "cars" they just don't seem to see a motorcycle.  With all the distracted drivers out there...it's even more critical that we drive as defensibly as possible.  I am still in the first 500 miles of getting back in the saddle since 1972!  I am so glad that the "instinct" was still there!
In 1972 I had to make a choice...quit riding...or quit drinking.  God says it's safe to get back in the saddle now...at least I'm still alive...and feel more alive with the wind in my face!  Now riding "Helen Black"...1982  CB750SC.

There are steps to take to improve conspicuity:  headlight modulator, florescent vests, additional running lights, to name a few.  The headlight modulator is legal in all 50 states, mandated by federal law; it is also legal in Canada.  I know many folks don't like them, but my experiences, on three different bikes, have shown them to be highly effective.  But then, I also wear a florescent vest, and I am adding additional running lights (LED's which are intensely bright -- 6 Watts won't kill my alternator).  Cheers!

I personally rock a high visibility helmet and thankfully haven't had any issues so far.

I also ride like people are actively trying to kill me and are scheming to make it look like an accident.  Being paranoid like that keeps me alive and ensures my son has a Dad.

I wear a black helmet, black jacket and ride an almost black bike.I am far from hi viz. I follow at extremely long distances.I have my rear brake pedal set up intentionally so i can activate the brake light when i ever i want to,not just when braking.Watch my mirrors constantly. If things get too crowded for my liking i just pull over and let the busy bees pass.

Im glad to hear you didnt get hurt,Mike.Good driving on your part or +1 ,as they say now

I like to ride with my 12 gauge strapped on my back. It seems to make people notice and not pull in front of me much any more.

Lane changers, yes.Any suggestions for deer?I only had one encounter with a deer,it was avoidable. One mexican stand off at 1:30 am with a skunk...patience is a virtue.I did slightly bump a possum the other day.He rolled with it I guess. He seemed ok as he waddled off.Its like riding in a nature preserve out here, then once i get in the city all the animals show up.It seems like i can hear them thinking:"Its only a skinny lil motorcycle...he doesnt need that WHOLE lane all to himself".
