Can anyone solve my Honda part mystery battle for me? Please :)

Dobb
This post was updated on .
I'm in a friendly back and forth with a group about what type of header pipe flange was stock on the 1977 Honda CB400F.
I've seen vintage photo ads clearly showing the common "ribbed" flanges on the 1977, but I have people who are telling me that the flanges were flat on that year/model, even giving me part numbers. The trivia is driving me crazy! Perhaps Honda changed flanges during the 1977 production?
Does anyone know the answer?
Thank you!
And BTW, hello, I'm new here from NW WA.

Welcome. As far as I know, Honda did not make a CB450F. However, in 1977 they made a CB400F and it had ribbed/finned exhaust flanges. I have never seen anything on any Honda four or twin but the finned flanges.

I really appreciate your reply. My mistake, it is a 400, not a 450. Is your answer based on experience as an owner, or have you been in sales/retail market ?

Thanks again.

Got it. Someone also claims that there are other Hondas of that year which had interchangeable exhaust parts and flanges, and the 400 we are discussing may have been assembled at the shop with a flat flange from another new model. Who knows. All I know is that the bike in question is being sold as completely stock, almost as new, and it does have the correct headers and exhaust, with the flat flanges.

The only Hondas with flat flanges that I know of are some of the single cylinder models. I have seen flat flanges with aftermarket exhaust systems. Do you have pictures of the parts in question?

This bike is on the "Bring a Trailer" auction site with one day left. Maybe you can join up and tell them how it is. That will stir up a few people and start the debate all over again. :)

I have never heard of that site. Do you have a link that you can post? Also, I have never seen any "aluminum billet" clamps like that on any stock Honda. I also question the exhaust pipes. I have never seen stock 40+-year-old piped look that shiny.

Go to current auctions, and keep scrolling down. You'll see it with about 19 hrs to go.

That is a very nice bike. I have an idea of what happened with the exhaust flanges. It was very common back then for aftermarket hi-performance exhaust systems to be installed on new bikes, and this one probably got one. A lot of the time the original exhaust was lost or thrown away. This bike's diligent owner probably saved his original exhaust system and reinstalled it. However, the original flanges might have been lost and the ones from the aftermarket exhaust used when the original exhaust was reinstalled.

Sounds right. This bike will get big dollars, for sure. Now you can see why all the back and forth about the flanges. You might want to join the site. It's a lot of fun, and some awesome bikes and other vehicles get on board...stuff rarely seen. Plus, as someone who knows their Hondas, you can help with questions. If you just type in "Motorcycles" you will see all that are on there now. There's a few more Hondas and a great 80's Ducati scrambler.
