Long story short had a local shop rebuild my carbs, just bolted them up & hooked up a temp fuel bottle. As soon as I open the valve, fuel starts leaking, mainly from #2 carb. Wtf?? Can anyone due a job right anymore?? Forgot to mention I waited 3 months for these. Anyone know any prone leakage points on these carbs??

I actually bought the bike from the shop, they said oh it runs perfect. Just needs a front master cylinder & new tires. I told the guy I went to start the bike & it started leaking fuel from the carbs. He said bring them & I will rebuild all the carbs. Once I had them bolted on I found a crap load of loose screws. Sorry just had to rant, poor service pisses me off.

Lol yeah I know. I will be pulling the carbs back off tomorrow & start going through them. I was just trying to save some time by having this guy do them. If you want it done right do it yourself

Hey Clyde, that does suck. Where is it leaking? And what carbs do you have? When I redid mine they would leak out of the overflows cuz the needle were leaking. IME the rubber tipped needles leaked where as my solid metal tips have yet to leak(ever since I chucked the rubbers and put the metal tips back in.

What year were the carbs?

Oh, you have a DOHC. Im clueless about those carbs. Seestheday and Hellbilly know about those. There are others here that know a lot about them, too. Those two just came to mind first.

Since you found loose screws and a fuel leak, better to just take them apart and see what the clowns did.Did they even use new parts!
There are a number of places these carbs can leak ...... fuel rails, float needles, bowl gaskets.
|
|
Yep, need more details on where the leak is. Overflow tube leaks due to stuck needles are common.
Check out the dohc carbon cleaning procedure thread for a lot more detail.

You cannot put rubber tip needles in seats made for metal tip float needles.
Also if the rubber tip needles are old, then all bets are off.
I have even seen USED old rubber tip needles for sale on Ebay.
Same price as new +shipping!!!

Thanks!!
One large place they tend to leak is if the fuel entry spot isn't SPOTLESS. If they didn't use brasso on where the float goes in, then it's not getting a good seal.
I used a fair amount of brasso, and it seals so good I leave the petcock on and never get overflow. And I do NOT have the vacuum assist valve, I removed it.
Most likely the rubber tips are used, or that isn't very well cleaned.
How's it run otherwise?

I have not been able to run the bike, the leak is that bad. As soon as I open the valve on my test bottle the carbs start leaking. Leak seems to be the worst on #1 & 2 carbs.

|
Are they leaking around the bowls or out the over flow tubes?
Simple if some one else can, why can't I

If its that bad coming out of the overflow, then it sounds like the bowl is already full, and the float isn't closing at all. Pull it apart and check if your float has a pinhole leak. Stick them under water for an hour, see if they get ANY water in them. If they do, they need to be replaced. They are filling with gas and pulling the valve down.
If leaking from around the bowl get the gasket replaced.

Bike should run just based on the fuel sitting in the bowls if it's leaking through the overflow tubes. At least for a short while anyways. I guess if it's leaking through the drainage plugs then it wouldn't have any gas at all. OPEN did say something about loose screws... Maybe a very simple problem.
Also, before throwing the shop owner completely under the bus, have you talked to him about the issue? I know if I owned a shop that I'd be freaking horrified if something like this left my shop and I'd do the right thing and make it right. We have all made mistakes at work. Something to think about.

I know we all have bad days. I was just venting because he had them for sooo long, I would stop in & he would flat out tell me didn't have a chance to get to them. I said no rush (in Feb), then it changed to by Fri. Then I had to start calling instead of wasting my gas to find out they weren't done yet. The guy is a nice guy, that is why I did not mention the shop name or location.

Did a little work on my carbs, tried blowing air through the fuel line to pin point the leaks. Looks like the overflows are leaking on all 4 carbs. Also I found the crossover tubes from the accelerator pump are loose, I can spin them by hand. Should these tubes move at all??
|
|
By blowing air thru the fuel line, your just forcing fuel to go somewhere. Not a good idea IMO.
The tubes are just sealed with o-rings,they will spin.
