Chain help

I go to tighten my chain, i line up the hash marks and make sure it is straight but when i roll the wheel by hand the chain will get tight, then loose, tight, then loose, etc...i have made sure it is straight and that its not the brakes or anything like that...any suggestions?

Did you use the "line trick" to align the wheel? Sometimes the hash marks aren't very accurate. So I usually use the line method the first time I align the rear wheel on the bike then once straight I check to see how close the hash mark relly are. Then if they are you can always use the hash marks after that.

Is the chain new? If not you probably have links in the chain that are binding - you should take the chain and soak it in a bucket of kerosene for a couple days - grease it up and try it again.
