EK, RK, Tsubaki, D.I.D., regina... lots of good chains. What you want to do is scrounge the net and find a site with a good chain sale.
You should change the sprockets too while you are at it. Old sprockets will quickly destroy a new chain.

I would say budget for 200 for all 3 parts. I am guessing you have a 630 chain. You might be able to find a 530 conversion set and that would drop the price a bit.

ugh, forgot about sprockets. Thanks for the pointers guys. The chain/sprocket set currently on my bike only have 9000 miles on them tops because that's how many the bike has, but they are probably the originals so they're, what, 33 years old? I might have to stick with them for a little longer though. I know I shouldn't wait too long on replacing them, but how can I tell when they absolutely have to go?

Well age isnt that huge a deal but they do age somewhat though as long as there is no major rust on the chain, you should be ok.
As for replacement, get the chain adjusted right, then pull the chain at the back of the rear sprocket, if you can pull it off enough to see between the link and sprocket, it should be replaced. This means the link pins are worn out.

I would recommend getting a chain with a tensile strength of 9500-ish or more. I didnt and my last chain stretched like crazy. As far as brand,I have no idea. I'm rocking a Bikemaster right now and it seems to be holding up fine. I only have less than 400 miles on it so far,but they've been hard miles and it hasn't stretched any at all.
