Chain

jbrightwell
How do I tell what size chain (530-630) my 81 750k has?  There are 110 links, and it says DID50 so I am sure it has been replaced at some time.  If it is a 630 I would just as soon stay with that as the sprockets look fine.  I know from posts here that a 530 is better but then I would have to get new sprockets too.  Any input appreciated - Thanks

Sprockets, and chains wear together. If one is worn out, so is the other.

Very very true but - sprockets don't wear out or become unsafe from lack of use.  well maybe some but not like a chain that the P.O. never lubed or took care of with normal maintenance.  I am replacing the chain more for safety and reliability issues.  Just like my tires.  Not in bad shape tread wise but weather checked and need to be replaced.  As I stated before I am unsure what is on the bike now, I would guess the standard 630 but a DID 50 chain wouldn't be original would it??

If it is marked 50, it should be a 530 chain. If you measure from pin centre to pin centre, a 530 chain measures 5/8 inch (15.875mm). A 630 chain measures 6/8 inch (19.05mm). They are definately not interchangable, unless you also change both sprockets.

Thanks Rodgil!!  Mine measures 5/8 right on!  I have a 530 chain with 110 links.  Thanks to you all for your input and knowledge about these bikes.  Since I follow every post on this forum , I have been able to help some other people with problems on their bikes too.  I pays to know people that know!
