Cleaning my carbs. Gasket question.

Muscle racer
Hey guys,

I'm have to clean my carbs, but I was wondering if I really need a gasket kit. It's like $70 on eBay for 4 carbs. I don't want to buy it, then not need it.

I guess the only way of knowing is after I take it apart, right?

It's my first time cleaning my carbs, but I have found lots of videos and info online.

I hope I do it right.

Tks

I have had my 78 carbs a part a few times with out buying a kit. Just take your time. If you rip or brake one just replace them all. Make sure you clean out all your jet good.  Good luck
Simple if some one else can, why can't I

You do not need a gasket "kit".

You should not need a float bowl gasket or O ring. but if you already
removed it you can get those separately.

If you have 1978 carbs the idle jets just pull straight out as you twist.

Make sure to hold them up to the light to make sure you can see light through them. Clean with a #10 or .010 thousandths electric guitar string.
You can buy those separately, You do not have to buy a whole set.

I haven't taken anything apart yet. I just don't wanna buy all the gaskets, then not have to replace any.

The carbs haven't been clean in atleast 2 or 3 years.

I think it's ridiculous how a small piece of rubber can cost up to $80 on eBay.

Chances are you'll need new float bowl gaskets. They tend to be the onky ones that ever need replacing.

What year?

Google your year and "float bowl gaskets" and you'll find some.

That's what I did.

Turbos, Hondas, 4-bangers, what could go wrong?

I have been getting mine local. If you buy them from certain sites they charge you ''vintage'' prices if you know what i mean. They are not cheap either way. vintagecb750.com sells them for $4.95 per gasket. You may find them cheaper on the flea bay.

Don't scrimp on gaskets or seals. It's a royal pain to take these carbs out and reinstall only to find something leaks. The worst ones are the cross tube o-rings. Thirty year old rubber doesn't take kindly to being disturbed and even if you don't separate the bank, the fuel supply and accelerator pump tubes are likely to leak from the stress of tugging and shoving the bank to get it out and back in. Then you're painting the air blue while you do it over again to replace the o-rings.

If they are the original gaskets or many years old ,I would peplace them.
Do the job right the first time!
