Clear Tube Reference Point

Hoko
When using a clear tube to check the gas level in my carb bowls, what should the reference point be?  X millimeters below the bowl lip or the gasket or what?

You are headed for trouble.

Set the floats the proper way with a float gauge or a measuring device.
Page 125 ,illustration #13 bottom of page, Clymer's workshop manual.

AFTER,,,,,AFTER,,, you do that, THEN you can use the clear tube method.

Page #60  - paragragh #7  "AFTER you set the floats as described "on Page 125. Clymer's.

But you can choose to just ignore this .

I have never known ANY person to set the floats the proper way then
go back and mark the float bowl using the clear tube method and (report back to us) and tell us how many millimeters or inches the fuel level would be. How could they?
When you remove the float bowl to look inside, the float drops and starts filling up the float bowl instantly then you cannot know what the level really was. Very sloppy results.

Lucky The clear tube will show, you right where the fuel level is. You do not need to remove the float bowl, for anything besides adjusting the float. I have used clear tubing to make water levels several times over the years doing construction projects. They are the most accurate levels there is, and they can even go around corners, and to other rooms....

The book says to measure the floats FIRST....THEN use the clear tube method.

The clear tube just shows you where the fuel level is. Of course your going to need to adjust the float levels to some degree first. Then check the levels just in case one, or more floats are not floating at the height.

Wow. Im missing out on some fun I suppose. I just set mine to level and rock on down the road. Bikes lean,go uphills and down, wheelie, slam on brakes and nose dive...etc. Theres a good bit of cushion in these bowls IMO to absorb all of this. Never hurts to be sure though ,I guess.

Well Rerun says 3mm below the gasket and Hondaman says 4mm below the gasket so it sounds like we're all in the ballpark.

Why don't you just measure the float like the book says,
and then you will be out of the ball park and be on the home plate?

Thats what I plan on doing.  The clear tube measurement is just to fine tune the level.

The clear tube method is so you can see if all of the levels are the same.
