Clutch won't engage

Boucher
I tried adjusting the clutch cable on both ends before I realized the cable was starting to break on the hand level end. My manual said to turn the adjuster screw on the clutch basket counterclockwise several times until resistance is felt, so I did that prior to replacing the cable.

I just got the new cable on, but now the clutch doesn't engage. I tried turning the adjuster screw back out a few turns, but the locknut is now stuck on the adjuster screw and it does not want to back out. Any suggestions?

I would re adjust the clutch to the new cable.
It may be cross threaded. I hope not though.
spray some penetrating oil like wd-40 on it and try again after a 30 minute soak time.
The nut on the handlebars? or the engine cassing?
Taking the cable off might help release some of the pressure on it too.

After installing the new cable and getting the adjusting screw (on the clutch basket) free, I cannot get the clutch to engage. The cable is adjusted so that it should have the least amount of free play, so it must be something with the clutch lifter mechanism assembly. Having never done this before, I drained the oil and opened the cover to see if turning the adjuster screw too much did something, but as far as I can tell, the lifter mechanism is relatively straight forward.

So what did I screw up so that the clutch won't engage?
