Comstar Rims

Hoko
This CB750 I bought is the first bike I've had that has Comstar Rims.  I read an article that said sometimes the rivets come loose  in Comstar Rims.  Have any of you had this problem?

I believe in my build Honda states that there is nothing stronger, better then Alluminum mags.could be used on a truck I know many loose the plastic covers ,I broke one by the way,So if you dump yours let me know.could hold the whole thing.cause once there bend or damaged there junk ,good luck trying.

Loko Ya going to wont to read all of this.

I havent been around these bikes much, but 'm trying imagine the force required to stretch the rivets on a comstar. They are pretty beefy and it would be alot IMO. Anything is possible, but I dont think i'd worry about.:)

Thx Piute and Shiny, looks like that claim was largely unfounded since it is the only one out of many who say the opposite.  I followed your link Piute to that 3 mile long paragraph , I'll sit down to read it when I have a couple of hours, LOL

Re: Comstar Rims

Comstars are very solid wheels. Used in competition by Honda and never heard of any comming appart.

Had that been the case, imagine the "Class Action Lawsuits" that would had ensued, and the ammount of publicity and millionare settlements.

That never happened. Those "failure" stories are just that, fallacies, stories made up by people that have nothing good to say, whose conversation summarizes up as a "Load of fabrications and misrepresentations". Failures themselves !

     Comstars are great wheels !

Being the owner of another Honda that has Comstars.... this rumor of them failing is probably centered around the recall Honda had  which was only applicable to the 1978 GL1000 (Goldwing) bikes.

In response to complaints of poor wet weather braking performance, Honda has released Call ID # 57186 September 13, 1977. An estimated 796 GL1000s 1978 were affected by the recall. According to Honda: "when applying the front brake, a combination of speed and road conditions can cause particular spoke aluminum blades to fight, eventually leading to the collapse of the wheel."

Re: Comstar Rims

That recall was issued on one specific model bikes and only for the front wheel and only for a specific year production, never including the GL in absolute terms. It did not include other model bikes using the same Comstar Wheels at all. ( CB750, 750F, 900F, 1100F,  6 cyl CBX, CX500, MB5,CB Custom, CB "K", and many more )

It was a small number of defective wheels made and used only in the GL bike, and only for the front wheel, and only for the aluminum front wheels ( not included steel Cosmtars for that same model bike)

A very,VERY small number of wheels, contrasting  hundreds of thousands of perfectly built and manufactured Comstar Wheels. A small badge cought and recalled right away.

But 99% of people that I read and / or hear  badmouthing Comstar Wheels are just sowing ill comments out of ignorance, they never quote nor mention this recall which  is specific. I say 99.9% because this is the very first time ever I heard this reference . I would like to learn about one single case in court, about a Comstar Wheel falling appart. That would have been catatastrophic to Honda and it would had certainly resulted in more than one death.

That was exactly my point jaimesix... I believe that is what the ill feelings towards Comstars is centered around. But somehow All the wheels of that style, even the later Reverse Comstars got thrown into the actual very small group.
Kinda like saying all Pinto's blow-up.
Uh-oh... showin my age.

For sure Hoosier. I did understand your post. I know you intended to show one probable reason for all that innuendo.

I agree, several products through history have fallen victim to a concktail of corrosive ignorance and mis information.  The Ford Pinto, the Suzuki Samurai, and modern attempts like the apocriphal complaints about Honda vehicles suffering from brake lock while in motion  ( remember the guy in a freeway claiming his brakes locked in while a police officer in a patrol followed at close range. It all was a fabrication )... just innuendo .

I love my Comstars. One of the reasons I stopped going to a couple of so called "brand" sites ( no names in order to keep it civilized, no need to start WWIII ) .. for my specific bike is that I heard those comments, from people promoting swapping in modern bike wheels and suspensions.

I have nothing against anyone looking to upgrade their bikes, but using as an argument statements about Comstar wheels being dangerous, terrible, and quoting fabricated stories in support of their agendas was too much.

To those facing fantastic statements, exercise your right to have an open mind. Listen to those comments, take them into account, but like in good scientific experiments and investigations, the theory or statement needs be proven. Otherwise it is just just hot air......never seen it....nowhere to be seen.

Comstars are for ever....prove of it is the number of bikes with Comstars still on the road !
