Cost of basic service and once over

Gedward
I've been working on my 76 750F which I thought was fairly sound given it's age. I have no experience with motorcycles so the Haynes workshop manual has been my bible. I have however decided that, for safety sake, Ive reached the end of my abilities and need to take it in for a Profesional tune up and once over. I was wondering if anybody might want to wager a guess on the cost?  I know there is an oil leak, it seems to be missing a bit, the electric starter doesn't work and I think there is a slow battery drain (not the alternator I tested it with a volt meter). Anyway based on that limited info I'm looking for anybodys best guess what a reputable pro might charge to go over it.  Ballpark would be awesome I don't want to go into these places like a 19 yo blond ditz at jiffy lube with dads credit card if ya know what I mean.

I do all my own work, so I am not sure of how much a shop will charge. However I will take a rough guess at A LOT. All the things you mention are not that hard to do. I would suggest you go on, and give it a try.

Ok  I cowboy upped and am figuring it out. Looks likes I have some oil leaks around the tach cable coming out of the engine and some coming out of the screws for the gear box on. Two questions is the tach cable supposed to move in and out a bit or not. The screw holding it down is tight but I can't find that answer. Alse the screws under the grear box are nice and stripped so I can't check the seals. Would some of that stuff that creates a seal on the out side be an ok temp fix? I'm thinking yes since the screws are stripped any way.

The tach cable should fit tight. How badly striped are the screws? Have you tried an impact driver? If that does not take them out, I often use my Dremel with a cutoff wheel to slot the screw. Then use the impact driver to remove them.

I found a friend w an impact wrench and I think that will work because they aren't that bad.  Asnfar as the tach cable goes if the screw is in tight what part am I missing to get it nice and snug.

The tach cables are never super tight. AS long as you have a good tach cable seal, they dont need to be tight.
If you got leaking there, just get a new seal, use a hooked pick to get the old one out. Slip the new one in with your finger and seat it with the end of the tach cable. Put in the screw and you are ok.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

For future reference, labor would likely run between $75-$90 per hour...  Parts are extra.  Shop work is spendy, so the more you can do yourself, the more you save.  Cheers!

If you can even _find_ a shop that works on bikes that are more than 10-15 years old.  The Honda dealer closest to me charges $90/hour for the newer bikes, and $125-150/hour for anything older than 15.

This may be why we work on them ourselves. :-)  I find them rather easy to repair.  This is due to Honda's engineers of the day.  They are simply built, and reliably engineered. I'm getting ready to re-do the brakes on the Avenger II this weekend.  Fronts (dual disc) should take maybe an hour or so, the rear (drum) maybe another 2 hours.  If I can find the parts, that is...

Do you need to take the gas tank off to install the tach oil seal?

Holy You-Know-What, Batman!

I eat all of my complaints. I'm paying $85 an hour for labour -- vintage bike specialty shop. I shall no longer complain.

[when I bought the bike I was going to take it into our "regular" shop for its safety, and they sent me to where I now go --said "go there -- he knows what he's doing on those bikes more than we do, and he's cheaper too".

I have no problem with it. Sounds like a very reasonable shop rate.
