Different exhausts=different power?

I was wondering if there were any performance differences to the different styles of exhaust on these bikes,or is it just aesthetic? For example, the Super Sports came with 4-1 setups whereas the typical bike would have 4-4's.Is the 4-2 on the SS models for increased high rpm power, looks, or just weight savings? I understand that free flowing is better regardless the style, but does one style actually out perform another style in a particular rpm range?

Just curious as i have a set of pipes to make and am just trying to do a little research first. Thanks.

I will give you a hint.

When you see top fuel dragsters what
kind of exhausts do they have almost exclusively?

To give a brief rundown for bikes.
4-1  give a better top end hp but lower bottom torque.
4-4 gives better lower and mid power but lower top hp
4-2 is a compromise

This is the difference between the 3 styles.
After that you move into differences is mufflers themselves such as baffling. Wavelengths caused by different system lengths. Back pressure and scavenging from different diameters of pipe.

Then of course you have the straight pipe. Virtually useless except in all out applications.

This is a brief, rough explanation.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

Rerun,I was thinking about this some more. When you say 4-2 is a compromise,do you mean a compromise as in 'best of both worlds' or 'not really good for either'?

On these bikes, (unless you are racing) I would go for sound and looks (what make you smile). Then jet accordingly.  I love the sound of my Mack 4 into 1 and so do others.
