Different swing arms?

clyde the ape
Here's my dilemma, I bought some parts off a guy that were said to be off a dohc cb750 dragbike.  I wanted to use the extended swing arm on my 79 750ltd, but a few things are different & it doesn't look like it is a direct bolt on.  Does anyone know if there are any differences on 79 - 82 dohc cb750 swing arms?  Thanks in advance.

The 79 had its own swing arm. It will bolt right onto an older CB 750, but the 80 on was 1/2 inch wider where it bolts to the frame, and has a larger bolt. You can cut a 1/4 inch off each side of the swing arm, and drill the frame holes out 5/8 inch to mount the latter swing arm. Not really a difficult thing to do. I have done a few of them.

Just curious, is there a model out there that will bolt on easily to cb 750 f 1980?  Wouldnt mind having a more sportbike rear end, bigger tire etc.

This makes no sense to me .
Why change the swing arm?
The stock swing arm works perfect and the load is distributed
evenly on that 1/16 wall thickness frame.
Aluminum swing arm I can understand with two shocks. That is fine.

Putting on a mono shock swing arm just makes it difficult to work on.

The stock shocks can easily be removed (one at a time), for maintenience without having to jack up
the bike and the swing arm, or getting your fingers pinched in the linkages.

This was the original sport bike.

The monoshock swing arm puts a lot of stress on points of
the stock frame instead of spreading out the load.
If it was designed as a monoshock suspension,
then the frame was designed around that monoshock.

If you are going to put on a monoshock swing arm and put on a R6 front forks, then you might as well change the frame too. Just use the CB750 engine in a 33 year old frame? Why??

None of it makes any sense.

Are the stock rear shocks rebuildable or do you just buy new ones?

My problem is the pivot tube is for a larger diameter bolt, and the swing arm in narrower than the frame.  I have it mocked up, and I can shift the swing arm side to side.  Also I can't reuse the stock dust caps because the tube is a larger diameter.

Drill out the hole for the larger bolt, then add washers on each side for shims.

That was what I was thinking. Any idea if a 82 Cb750ss has a different swing arm than the 79 Cb750ltd?  I think this one may have come from an 82.

The 82 should have a larger, and longer bolt, and be 1/2 inch wider then the 79 where it attaches to the frame.
