Drive chain replacement issue!!

opie18
Hey all,

I've been looking around the forum all day but could not find an answer for my problem. I'm currently in the process of replacing the drive chain on my 1980 CB750K with a Tsubaki 530QR 108 links. All was going well until the time came to tighten up the chain and align the wheel.

Even with the wheel pulled as far back on the swing arm as possible, the chain still has way too much slack and the chain adjuster screws barely touch those oddly shaped brass spacers that fit in the end of the swing arm. With those spacers removed, I can pull the chain tight enough....    I am relatively new to motorcycle repairs so I apologize if this is a silly call for help. Thanks for any suggestions, love this forum.

you need to take a link or 2 out.
the chain is too long

they make chain link breakers
i just grind the head off the rivet
the things that kinda stick out on the sides of the chain,
on the link i want out
then pry the link apart with a screwdriver, or a chisel

install chain and go riding

I move the wheel all the way forward, and pull the chain tight on the rear sprocket. After I figure out where they will meet, and can be broken/cut (they must be cut where the master link can be installed correctly) I cut/break the chain. Then install a master link (in my case it is ALWAYS a CLIP TYPE!, and never a rivet type.) Then adjust the chain.

Thanks guys! I suppose I figured that a new chain with manual specs would need to be modified...I'll let you know how the project finishes.

Happy America day.

You have to have a chain breaker tool.
About $13.

I bought mine when I had my first job in a motorcycle shop.
I still have it and it still works and I have used it many times.
