Engine Painting

Honda Dog
My 75 CB750
Hi, I am a new member from Carson City, NV. I am the happy owner of a completly restored CB750. It has 32,000 original miles and every thing is perfect but one thing. When I took the bike apart to do the restore I did everything but repaint the engine. Dumb move on my part but the engine looked good until I got it back together and looked at it compared to the rest of the bike. So now I am going to pull the engine. I am going to have the cylinder head cover polished. I am going to media blast the rest of the engine. The problem I am having is what paint to use on the engine. I have not had any luck finding a high temp paint that will match the original Honda engine color. Any help would be great.
All stock except Dyna-S solid state ignition and tires. It has 32,000 original miles. The complete bike has had a frame bare restore.

Nice looking bike! If you are looking for a good paint to use, I would check out shinyribs' build thread.
He went with a nice silver paint that I think may have been designed to emulate aluminum.

As for me, I'm going for flat black and then polishing the edges of the fins

Re: Engine Painting

Thanks, and I will check it out. The black sounds cool but I try to keep my bikes as stock as possible. I have found over the last 40 years that if the bike is perfectly stock it will sell for a higher price. Though this bike is my baby and I intend to keep it for a long time. Where I live I am 35 minutes from Lake Tahoe, 15 minutes from Virgina City and 40 minutes from Reno. They are all great places to ride to and every late summer Reno has the Street Vibrations Ride which is a fantastic event to go to.

I just use regular paint on engines. I have painted several engines bike, car, and diesel with it. Never had a problem. The engines do not get hot enough to burn the paint off. I also like the rally wheel paint. It is very close to the Honda color.

Re: Engine Painting

Does anyone know if the original Honda paint is available or something very, very close?

I wasn't able to find what I thought was a dead match to the original paint either.Rally wheel paint,or argent silver some people call it,is very close but has some metallic to it. I used Rustoleum on my last engine paint job and am pretty happy with it.it is supposed to be oil and gas resistant and so far it seems that it is.I have a slight leak in the valve cover (all my fault) that dribbles just enough to need wiping every 400 miles or so.The oil wipes right off leaving no stains or residue at all.Last time I painted my engine I just pulled the tank and masked everything else off. It's alot easier than pulling the engine and you wouldn't risk scratching that newly done frame you got!

Re: Engine Painting

Thanks for the tip. Your engine looks great. I am still going to pull the engine. I to have a small leak in the cylinder head cover and I want to repair that and get the cover polished and you have to pull the engine to do it. Also while the engine is out I am going to check all the seals and replace any that look like they may be leaking. I also want to get paint on the back of the trans case and on the bottom also. I can pull the engine out in a few hours but you do need a second set of hands to do the final lifting. I will use towels and duct tape to cover up the frame so it does not get scratched. I have gone so far with this bike that I just want to finish it up perfect. Everything else is and I am kicking myself in the but for not painting the engine when it was out for the restore but it looked pretty good then so I passed. Big mistake on my part. I have a $1000 in just paint on the bike as it is now so why not just finish the job and I will be finally done.

How did this paint hold up in your bike for the summer? Also what all did you do to prep the engine as far as cleaning?

Re: Engine Painting

Hi, I didn't paint the engine yet. On the Honda CB750 the engine has to bo removed and it takes two people to do it. I don't have anyone around where I live to help me so it's on hold until one of my brothers or friends come to visit for four or five days. I want to have the top cam cover polished and then I will bead blast the engine with crushed walnut shells before I paint it. This bike is showroom quality except for the engine paint. I was really stupid for not doing it when the bike was restored. I had it down to the bare frame at that time and thought the engine looked pretty good at the time. When I got it back together I relized I was very wrong. Thanks for the tip on the paint. I did go and buy it and it will match the original color great.

Re: Engine Painting

I have put on maybe 500 miles. I don't drive it that much, the thought of a scratch or stone chip terrifies me. The bike is really museum quality. It's about 30 miles to lake Tahoe from me and I have driven up there and did the loop around the lake a couple of times. That is a great ride. I also run it up to Virgina City every now and then which is about 15 miles away. That is a mecca for bikers during the summer, so I run up there and have a beer at the Bucket of Blood Salon and head home. Every time I go up there there is people standing around the bike checking it out and asking me questions.

What do you ride and where?
By the way my name is Dennis.

It's done good so far. Bug guts wipe right off. I had a small gas drip issue for a while that didnt leave a stain. The color hasn't changed a bit. I have one spot that is peeling, but thats a spot that didn't get sanded like it should and the paint under it is actually lifting causing this new paint to lift. Real happy with it.Holds up well!
