Exhaust collars, which way do they go?

lusciouslemur
I have a 1980 cb750c with an aftermarket 4-1 exhaust. The exhaust came with those split collars that flange on one end and some copper gaskets. There are those metal fin collars as well. My question is, do the flanges of the split collars touch the intake or the metal fin collars? If they're by the intake they slide between the exhaust and fin collars, and there's no seal at all. But if they press against the flange of the exhaust I can't bolt down the fin collars at all. Thoughts?

It's hard to picture how you are saying it, so I will say how my 78 works.
First, make sure you have no gasket still sitting in the exhaust port. they usually look black from carbon and so can be hard to see. A pick will get them out.
Clean any excess carbon out where the seal sat, then put in the new copper seal/gasket.
Now, there is a flange at the end of the pipe, the split collars sit against that. On my 78, one side of the collars is flanged out. This side does not touch the flange on the exhaust pipe. The ring that is then bolted to the exhaust studs will touch those flanges. It is hard to describe without pictures.

Haha I know. I understand how your describing it. I'm going to check for old gaskets but I still feel that I won't be able to bolt down the ring all the way.

You should be able to. Most times when people can't it is cause of old gaskets, or not seating things right.

The ring does not sit against the head surface. It will have a gap. You just tighten the ring/collar until the nuts are tight. As for the sleeves, there are two different types. I would need to know which ones you have to tell you how they go. If you could post a picture of them, it would help.

The ring I was thinking of was the flange on the header pipe. No, the ring that pushes on the collars will not sit against the engine.  If you ever got that ring to the engine, it means you forgot the collars.

Okay, gotcha. I don't know if my collars are too long though, on one of the exhaust pipes I can't even get a bolt on the thread, the gap is that big. When I tried reusing the old collars air was spewing out.
