It's hard to picture how you are saying it, so I will say how my 78 works.
First, make sure you have no gasket still sitting in the exhaust port. they usually look black from carbon and so can be hard to see. A pick will get them out.
Clean any excess carbon out where the seal sat, then put in the new copper seal/gasket.
Now, there is a flange at the end of the pipe, the split collars sit against that. On my 78, one side of the collars is flanged out. This side does not touch the flange on the exhaust pipe. The ring that is then bolted to the exhaust studs will touch those flanges. It is hard to describe without pictures.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!
