Hmm...I do recall a few of the bolts that held the case halves together were a bit of a bugger to get off. Needed a battery powered impact driver to get them off. Seems there was a bit of corrosion on the bolt. Maybe the cases hadn't been apart before. Anyhow, if I were doing it at home, I'd load up on PB Blaster (a very good penetrating fluid), soak them babies overnight, give them some light taps with a metal hammer, and see if they come loose.
You'll definitely save some money if you can do most of the grunt labor ahead of the mechanic doing his magic. This includes pulling the carbs, cleaning the outside, removing the engine, etc. Just take LOTS of pictures on how you took it apart. Use LOTS of plastic bags (with zip-loc openings, preferablt) for each system's hardware. Try and coordinate with your mechanic on what you can do vs. what he should do.
If you're not sure about this mechanic, it couldn't hurt to hunt another one down (if another one's available) and see what he says. It's similar to a "second opinion" in the doctor business.
