Fixing 81 carburetors

austin81994
Hello, My friends. I'm new to this forum. I have a 1979 cb750 but somewhere in it's history, someone unfortunately put a 1981 motor in it. The bike has a 4-1 aftermarket exhaust and of course was missing the factory air box. I bought a carburetor rebuild kit and rebuilt them with new components because the carbs were dirty and out of ignorance I bought some cheap pod air filters and since then I realized that was a mistake. I'm getting a factory air box to put on instead. The bike fires up alright but it will not even begin to idle. As soon as the rpm's drop, it falls flat on it's face. furthermore, it revs extremely unevenly and the motor runs rough. So that's the story on the bike. I've found some conflicting information on the reference adjustment for the pilot screw. The model number on the carburetors is VB42A, and my Clymer manual doesn't list the reference adjustment for my carburetors for some reason (it lists the VB2A at 1 1/2 turns and the VB42C at 1 3/4 turns). I think It's supposed to be around 3 turns based on a couple of sources I found online but they weren't very specific. So I don't know where to start from with the pilot screws adjustment. The next thing is the issue of rejetting with the 4-1 exhaust and factory air box. I'm planning that the carbs will have to be rejetted up a little bit but all the information I've found was regarding rejetting with a pod and exhaust combination. What would you say is a good place to start for the jets with just the aftermarket exhaust? Right now, they have the stock 68/102 jets. Thank you very much for any information to get me on the right track! I'm really trying to get out on my bike in the warm weather!
