Front Wheel Axle Cap Nuts

RodneyCB750K1979
There is a lot of debate about which of the nuts to tighten first on the front axle retaining cap nuts.  My Honda Shop Manual says the forward nuts should be tightened first followed by the rear. This leaves a slight gap at the rear of the caps.  Others are arguing the opposite tightening sequence should be followed leaving a slight gap at the front of the caps.  Which is the correct method?

Really! You question the HONDA FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL on this? The manual is correct!!!!! Just be sure to put the caps on in the correct position! The thicker side goes towards the front. You can tell which side this is by setting them on a flat surface, you will see one side is thicker.

I think the confusion arrived by "HondaMan" over at the SOHC forums.

He's been always an extremely valuable source of information. He's worked in the US Honda Factory for 20+ years, assembled bikes when they were shipped from Japan, and has crazy amounts of knowledge.

He mentioned that the Honda manual was wrong on this, as he's seen bikes shipped straight from Japan with the gap in the front. There has also been strength testing to show that it's better for the gap to be in the front

Others have stated basically what TOOLS has stated: the service bulletin is correct. If you follow the arrows on the bottom of the caps, then it will match what the service bulletin is saying.

I don't think there is a definate 100% sure answer that anyone can bet their life on. I had followed Hondaman's advice for a awhile, and then decided that I should follow the service manual, so I switched mine back last night.
